Eyelid Lift Surgery - What are the Benefits?
Aug
You may have noticed that your eyelids look tired, despite being well rested and leaving cucumbers on your lower eyes for the past month. Maybe you have noticed the beginnings of bags under your eyes. If you’re a sun worshipper, you may have noticed an increased amount of loose skin over the past several years.
Regardless of what you may be seeing, an eyelid lift is a strategic, focused procedure that helps you look more aware and refreshed. An eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, is one of the more common and successful procedures I perform to rejuvenate your face and gives you a more refreshed look. If you are considering an eyelid lift in San Francisco or the Bay Area, here are some of the benefits of a lower eyelid lift.

Look Less Tired
If you or your friends have noticed that you look tired, even though you’re not, then you may have acquired or developed more loose skin and bags under your eyes over time. An eyelid lift can remove the excess loose skin that you may have in your upper or lower eyelids. The incision is inside of your natural eyelid fold, so even without makeup, it should be very difficult to see.
If you have noticed that eye shadow is being lost or hard to place, or it’s getting into your eyelashes, this is an early sign that your upper eyelid skin is becoming looser, and may need to be tightened up.
If you have bags under your eyes, this may be caused by a slight excess of fat that’s pushing through your lower eyelid skin. Removing these tiny amounts of fat may help to reduce or eliminate the bags under your eyes, resulting in an appearance that’s more awake and rejuvenated.
Bags under the eyes and loose skin are not just problems for the older patient. Many younger patients, due to genetics and sun exposure, may develop these issues early in life. If you’re such a patient, then you may be a candidate for an eyelid lift.
Upper or Lower Eyelid Lift? Or Both?
An eyelid lift can be done on the upper or the lower eyelids. An upper eyelid lift mainly removes loose skin and some fat For the lower eyelid, mostly excess fat is removed, since there tends to be more fat and not as much loose skin in that area.
Of course, if you have signs of looking tired or aging in your upper AND lower eyelids (lucky you!), then a “quad” eyelid lift can be done. A quad eyelid lift is done on both the upper and lower eyelids.
Most Bang for your Buck
There are lots of facial procedures available to help you look younger and more rejuvenated. But an eyelid lift gives you the most “bang for your buck” so to speak.
Think about it. When you’re talking to someone, it’s natural for your eyes to be drawn to the other person’s eyes. It’s the way that all people communicate, with eye contact. Thus, an eyelid lift is proportionally better, in terms of dollars spent, compared to a facelift, necklift, nose job or forehead lift.
Shorter Surgery with Shorter Recovery
An eyelid lift is typically done on an out-patient basis, and the recovery is fairly short. Even with a quad blepharoplasty, the pain is moderate to minimal, and the sutures are usually removed 5-7 days after surgery.
If you don’t mind looking a little swollen and bruised, and if you have understanding friends and work colleagues, or simply don’t care what others think, you can be out and about within 2-3 days after your procedure. If you work from home, you can probably talk on the phone and do computer work within 2-3 days of your eyelid lift.
Alone or with Other Procedures
If you just choose to rejuvenate your eyes, you will have substantial improvement of your overall appearance and should look less tired and more youthful.
If you wish, you can further enhance your facial rejuvenation by combining your eyelid lift with other procedures, including the following:
- Face lift
- Neck lift
- Nose Job, or Rhinoplasty
Eyelid Lift with Fat Grafting
Hollow eyes are one of the more obvious signs of aging. Also, if you have a groove or deep fold under your eyes and above your cheeks, a.k.a. the nasojugal groove or crease or tear trough deformity, this may also make you look older and more tired.
Fat grafting, which is harvesting your own body’s fat through liposuction, is a great alternative to just undergoing an eyelid lift. During your surgery, I can fill in any hollowed eye areas with your own fat, which will give your eyes a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.
I have written extensively about eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, surgery.
